Catherine Murphy was born in Cambridge, Mass., and currently lives and works in Poughkeepsie, New York. She studied at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine and received a BFA from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. She has been awarded National Endowment for the Arts Grants and a Guggenheim Fellowship, and was elected a member of the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. In 2014, Catherine was awarded the Robert De Niro Sr. prize for distinguished mid-career American artists. In January 2017 she had a solo exhibition at Peter Freeman, Inc.—her first since the publication of a comprehensive monograph co-published by Skira Rizzoli and Peter Freeman, Inc.—that spans the entirety of her work.
